Trying triathlon has shown me I mostly want to swim. Should I keep the bigger goal or choose the part I enjoy?

Sports category photographSports

I opened the plan to rearrange three sessions around work and found myself looking forward only to the pool booking. The ride felt like preparation for a run I also wasn't excited about.

Six weeks ago I decided to try training towards a short triathlon. I haven't entered an event or committed anybody else's time. I liked the idea of becoming someone who could do all three sports, and I told a few friends that was the goal.

Now I enjoy swimming enough to keep going regularly. One friend says the parts I don't enjoy are exactly why I should persist; otherwise I'll only do what comes easily. Swimming hasn't come especially easily. It's simply the part I want to spend time learning.

Would you finish a trial period before deciding, or treat what I've learned about my preferences as a useful result already? I'm struggling to tell whether the bigger goal still matters to me or whether I just dislike announcing a smaller one.

Nobody else's entry or weekend depends on this choice, which gives you room to evaluate the goal honestly. What would make completing a triathlon worthwhile to you now? If the answer is mainly avoiding an awkward update to friends, that is useful information.
