I enjoy tennis matches but dislike spending a whole weekend waiting at tournaments. Is league play enough?

Sports category photographSports

My second match was listed for the afternoon, so I stayed near the courts after losing in the morning. By the time I played again, I'd spent nearly four hours checking whether the schedule had moved. On the drive home I realised I'd enjoyed the tennis and disliked most of the day around it.

A friend says that waiting is part of taking competition seriously. He loves travelling to events and meeting players between rounds. I like our evening league, where I can play and still have a Saturday with my family.

I haven't entered the next tournament. I'm wondering whether to skip it or try a different event format first. This isn't about thinking I deserve a convenient schedule from volunteers. I'm choosing how to spend my own spare time.

How would you tell the difference between avoiding a difficult sporting challenge and deciding that the tournament experience doesn't suit you? I don't want to keep entering weekends I resent just to prove I'm a serious player.

You enjoyed both matches, so the evidence here isn't that you dislike competing. It is that you dislike this way of arranging competition around a day. Evening league play can be a deliberate choice about your hobby, without requiring a verdict on how serious you are.

Your friend's enjoyment sounds real too. The waiting gives him conversations and a trip; it gives you four hours of watching the schedule. Neither of you needs to persuade the other to have the same favourite part of the weekend.
