Should we move our garden ceremony indoors when the venue hasn't solved the wheelchair route?
WeddingsOur friend looked at the venue video and said, "I can get into the building. I can't get across that path." The route from the entrance to the garden is loose gravel. She uses a power wheelchair.
The Auckland venue had described itself as accessible when we booked. On our visit, we'd checked the front door and toilets and missed the garden route. My partner loves the garden; it's the reason we chose the place. The indoor room is available at the same hire price, but it doesn't have the view we'd planned around.
The venue has suggested a temporary path costing about NZ$900, subject to a site assessment. It hasn't yet confirmed what would be installed or whether the route would meet our friend's access needs. We could cut flowers to help pay, though I don't want to buy a promise that fails on the day.
New Zealand's [Ministry of Social Development event guide](https://www.msd.govt.nz/about-msd-and-our-work/work-programmes/lead-programme-work/information-and-support/accessible-meetings-and-events.html) recommends checking the route from arrival through the venue and asking attendees about their needs rather than assuming.
Our friend says she hates the thought of "moving everyone's wedding". I don't want to leave her outside to preserve a view. How long is reasonable to investigate a workable garden route before we choose the indoor room and stop making this her problem?
