Should I reload after losing a favorite companion, or keep the story that surprised me?

Gaming category photographGaming

I closed the game after the funeral scene. A companion I'd traveled with for twenty hours had died because I misunderstood a choice. There is a save before the conversation, and the game lets me return to it.

I had intended to play this campaign without undoing outcomes. That was an agreement with myself, not a rule somebody else imposed. I liked not knowing where each decision would lead. Now my rule feels less interesting than getting that character back.

A friend said the death made my run distinctive. He's probably right. He also isn't the one who has to spend the next part of the game without the character whose dialogue I enjoyed most.

Would you leave the save alone for a day before deciding, or reload and accept that this is the kind of story you want? I don't need permission from the game. I'm trying to work out which choice will make me want to open it again.

You can value an unexpected story and still decide this particular outcome makes the game less enjoyable. A self-imposed rule is useful while it gives you the experience you wanted. Changing it doesn't erase the twenty hours you played under it.

Was the choice unclear to you, or did you understand the risk and hope the companion would survive? That distinction may affect how you feel about reloading. Neither answer supplies a universal rule, but it could help you name what bothers you about this death.
