Should I book another comedy night with a friend who keeps answering the comic?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

The comedian asked my friend what she did for work. She answered, got a laugh, and spent the next fifteen minutes treating pauses as invitations to add another detail about her office.

At first the comic used her answers. Later he said, 'I'll come back to you,' and moved to a different part of the room. She called out again. I touched her arm and whispered, 'Let him do the bit.' She stopped talking, but was angry with me afterward.

She said crowd interaction was part of the show and I'd made her feel foolish after the comedian had chosen to involve her. I said the invitation seemed to have ended. Neither of us knows how he actually felt, and I don't want to pretend the whole room agreed with me. I do know I missed several jokes while waiting for her next interruption.

She has now sent a link for another comedy night, with seats at the front. I enjoy her company, and I handled the arm-touch awkwardly. Is it reasonable to ask for an agreement about calling out before we book, or should I apologise and let her enjoy the show in her own way?

You can apologise for touching her arm without withdrawing your concern: 'I shouldn't have handled it that way. I also found it hard to enjoy the set when you kept calling out.' Keep the conversation about what happened between you rather than claiming to speak for the comedian or everyone behind you.

In the scene you describe, the initial work question was directed at her. The later pauses weren't necessarily questions, and 'I'll come back to you' was at least a reason to wait. You don't need a universal rule about comedy audiences to explain why those felt like different moments.

Did she think you were objecting to her answering the original work question? If so, you're arguing about different parts of the set. The concern you've described is the calls after the comic moved on; make that distinction clear.
