Can I stop watching a series with my partner when it has become our weekly ritual?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

My partner paused episode seven and said, 'You used to have theories. Now you're checking how long is left.' I was. There were twenty-three minutes.

We've spent Friday evenings watching a drama for almost two months. He makes popcorn, I choose dinner, and for the first few weeks we argued cheerfully about which character was lying. Now the story keeps returning to a relationship I don't care about. He's more invested than ever.

I pay $14 a month for the streaming service we subscribed to for this show. The next payment is due after this week's episode, and I was going to stop paying because I don't use it for anything else. When I mentioned it, he offered to cover the next month. That solves the bill, but I'd still be sitting through a show I'm no longer enjoying.

I'd happily keep Friday dinner and watch something shorter afterward. He says switching things now would spoil the one routine we've managed to keep. How do I separate wanting time with him from wanting to finish this series?

The service and price are illustrative.

His offer to pay answered the reason you gave first. Tell him the other reason plainly: 'Even if the subscription were free, I wouldn't want to keep watching this drama. I do want Friday dinner with you.' Otherwise you may end up discussing a bill that isn't the remaining problem.

You could offer a specific replacement Friday, including the dinner and popcorn, rather than just saying you'll still spend time together. That gives him something concrete to respond to. Choose the shorter film or activity together so the substitute doesn't become another series one of you has to endure.

He may miss the theories as much as the time on the sofa. Dinner would preserve being together, but it wouldn't necessarily replace discovering a story together. Ask which part of those early Fridays he wants back; that could point to a different shared activity rather than merely a shorter running time.
