Our volleyball trip got more expensive after I agreed to be a reserve. Can I still pull out?

Sports category photographSports

"It's another $70 each if we're keeping the van," our organiser posted on Monday. I had agreed to travel as one of two reserves for the weekend volleyball tournament. The eight selected players were paying $180 each; the organiser had offered the reserves a $60 contribution because we might not play.

I said yes on that basis. Now two players have cancelled, a smaller vehicle isn't available from the booking they chose, and the organiser wants everyone travelling to split the extra cost equally. He says the reserves will probably play more, so the original discount no longer makes sense. Nothing about selection has actually been confirmed.

I can cover the $60 I agreed to. Another $70 means dropping a different plan I have already set money aside for. I don't want to explain my whole budget in the team chat. The organiser has done a lot of work and says my withdrawal could leave them short of players and make the remaining shares larger.

Would it be fair to say my agreement had a price limit and let them decide whether to keep me at $60? Or, with the tournament only five days away, do I owe the team an effort to make the new amount work?

You can state the limit without providing your bank balance: "I agreed to the reserve place at $60. I can still do that, but I can't commit to $130. Please confirm whether the team wants me on those terms." Give an answer promptly so the organiser can revise the plan. Clarity now is more useful than a reluctant yes you may need to retract later.

The organiser's problem is real: fewer travellers have left a fixed transport bill to share. But the extra $70 is a new request, even if it feels unavoidable to him. Ask to see the updated total and alternatives before people are assigned new shares. That gives everyone a chance to decide what kind of trip they can actually fund.
