My nephew kept some of my son's handmade cards. Should family sharing mean he gets to keep them?

Family category photographFamily

“Let him have the five. They're only drawings,” my brother said when my son asked for his cards back.

My ten-year-old had spent several weekends making a set of dinosaur cards. He let his seven-year-old cousin use them during a visit. At home we noticed five were missing. My brother checked and found them in his son's bag; his son said he wanted to finish his collection.

I had told my son to share before the game, so now he thinks I agreed to give the cards away. I didn't. I also laughed when my brother called it a little collector's raid, which made my son stop explaining why he wanted them.

We are seeing them again on Sunday. How do I get the cards returned and acknowledge my own response without turning the younger cousin into the villain of the whole visit?

Your son lent the cards for a game, and the adults changed that into a proposed gift afterwards. Tell him you understand the difference and that you will ask for their return. The fact that he made them himself is part of why “only drawings” missed what mattered.

Ask your brother to bring the five cards on Sunday rather than leaving the decision to the children at the door. His son can be disappointed about an incomplete collection while still returning what he borrowed. The adults need to settle the return before organising another game.
