My friend keeps redesigning my game avatar because it doesn't fit our squad's look

Gaming category photographGaming

My plain green character appeared in the lobby beside three matching armored figures. Ben said, "I've made you a proper one," and sent me a design to copy.

I said I liked mine. He called it the placeholder and kept sending improvements throughout the evening. I know his designs take work, and he enjoys getting the squad screenshots right. I enjoy being the small green character next to everyone else's elaborate armor.

We haven't agreed to a uniform. There isn't a tournament requirement or a role I can't perform in the outfit I use. The conflict is about the picture we make together, and he thinks I'm refusing to join in.

Should I offer to use his design for an occasional group photo, or would that make him expect it every session? I want to appreciate something he created without accepting the idea that my own character is unfinished until he fixes it.

The word "placeholder" is doing a lot of work. Tell Ben your character is already a deliberate choice. He can prefer his design without treating your preference as a temporary error waiting for his next message.

His designs could be displayed or used by people who want them, if the game allows that. Appreciating the work doesn't require wearing it yourself. A compliment about a detail you actually like would be more honest than adopting the whole design out of guilt.

Would you enjoy the matching photo on its own? If yes, make it an occasional photo choice. If no, there is no need to invent a compromise that turns your leisure time into changing costumes for somebody else's album.

A mixed squad could be part of the joke rather than a design failure: three imposing armored figures and their small green colleague. You could suggest that picture once. Ben may have assumed unity meant matching when the contrast is what you enjoy.
