My flatmate's bulk meat order would fill our freezer. Is a lower price enough reason to give up my space?

Food category photographFood

The delivery form was open when my flatmate asked, "Do you want to go halves? It's cheaper than buying the small packs." The box contained more meat than either of us had bought at once before.

I said the price looked good, then asked where we'd put it. He pointed at the freezer drawer holding my bread and the meals I keep for late shifts. "We can clear that out over the weekend."

I hadn't agreed to clear it. Some of those meals are there precisely because I can't predict my shifts. He cooks at home most evenings and would get through his share sooner. If we divide the bill equally but he uses most of the drawer for a month, I lose the convenience I was already using it for.

He's offered to take more of the meat and pay more, which might work, but we still haven't discussed space. How would you decide whether to share this order before the attractive price becomes an argument that I ought to rearrange my dinners?

The drawer is doing a job for you already. Count that job when deciding whether the order is useful. A lower purchase price can be appealing without making your late-shift meals disposable. It's reasonable to say you need your existing space before either of you places the order.

His offer to pay for more meat addresses quantity, but it doesn't answer the space question. You could each identify the area you need to keep available and see what remains. If the proposed box won't fit, the answer may be a smaller order rather than a different split of the same large one.
