My child has to argue a policy she dislikes in a recorded school debate
Politics"Will people think that's what I believe?" my daughter asked, looking at the card assigning her the side in favour of charging admission to the town museum.
Her class is debating public funding choices. She thinks the museum should stay free. The teacher has assigned both sides and wants students to explain the strongest case for the position they draw. The school also plans to record the debate, although we haven't been told whether the recording stays in the classroom.
My daughter wants to ask for a different side. I can see a reason to practise understanding an argument without agreeing with it. I can also see why performing it for an unknown audience feels different from discussing it at a desk.
Should I help her ask about the recording first, or support her request to change sides? I don't want to teach her that she must either hide her beliefs or refuse to examine a view she dislikes.
