I manage our family shop, but my sister changes the plan when she drops in

Career / Work category photographCareer / Work

I opened the shop to find the window display dismantled. My sister had visited the evening before and told the assistant to put out the new range instead.

Our mother owns the business. I manage the shop day to day; my sister helps occasionally and knows the products well. She thought she was doing us a favour because the new range had arrived early.

The assistant showed her the display plan I’d left. My sister said, “Don’t worry, I’ll tell him.” She forgot to tell me. Now I have a half-finished window and an assistant who doesn’t know which sibling to follow.

At Sunday lunch, this will sound like an argument about a display. At work, it feels like a question about whether my role means anything.

How would you raise it with my mother and sister without carrying the whole family argument into the shop? I want their ideas, but I need staff to know how a plan actually changes.

The assistant shouldn’t have to resolve the family relationship. Start with the working arrangement: who can direct a change, where it is recorded and who tells the person currently responsible. Your sister may have made a good product decision and still bypassed a process the staff need.

Speak to your mother about what she wants your manager role to include. If she expects your sister to have equal authority, that needs to be stated and organised. If she expects you to run the shop, she needs to support that arrangement when family members visit. The title alone won’t answer the assistant’s question.
