I keep telling the version of my breakup where I didn't do anything wrong

Confessions category photographConfessions

A friend said, 'You were unbelievably patient with him,' and I realised she was describing a relationship I'd edited.

I've told people that my ex cancelled plans and stopped making an effort. Both happened. I haven't told them that I sometimes rejected his suggestions because they weren't the particular outing I'd pictured, then complained we never did anything. Or that our final argument started with a sarcastic message I sent while he was at a family dinner.

I don't want him back. I don't think explaining my part would turn the breakup into a mistake. But the more supportive my friends are, the more I hear myself giving them a cleaner account.

Do I need to correct everyone I've spoken to, or simply stop repeating it? Nobody is contacting him on my behalf. I'm uneasy about enjoying sympathy that depends on leaving myself out of the cause.

Your friends can support you without deciding you were blameless. You could correct the next sweeping compliment with something specific: 'I was hurt, but I also shut down some plans and sent a nasty message before that last argument.' That adds truth without requiring a full relationship transcript.
