I explained my friend's family argument to someone she hadn't told

Confessions category photographConfessions

'Oh, that explains the birthday photo,' our mutual friend said. I had just told her why Nisha wasn't speaking to her sister.

Nisha had told me privately after a coffee. She hadn't said the words 'keep this secret', but she'd lowered her voice and said she wasn't ready to discuss it with the group. I understood. A week later, another friend asked why the sisters weren't standing together in a photograph, and I supplied the explanation. I wanted to be helpful. I also liked being the person who knew.

The friend I told hasn't approached Nisha, as far as I know. She has asked me for an update, which makes it clear I didn't just pass along one harmless detail; I've made myself the source of a story that isn't mine.

Should I tell Nisha now, before she hears about it elsewhere? And should I ask the other friend to keep quiet, or would that just add another layer of people managing Nisha's own business without her?

The request for an update is a useful place to stop. You can say you shouldn't have shared the argument and won't discuss it further. That doesn't undo the first disclosure, but it closes the role you accidentally accepted: the person providing continuing family news.

Nisha did give you a clear limit, even without a ceremonial promise of secrecy. 'I'm not ready to discuss it with the group' told you what she wanted. An apology that focuses on the missing words 'keep it secret' would argue with a boundary you say you understood.
