I complained about my neighbour's piano after she didn't invite me to her gathering

Confessions category photographConfessions

I'd heard the piano at five in the afternoon for months. Last week was the first time I went upstairs and asked her to stop for the day.

Earlier that week she had held a small gathering with several people from our building. I wasn't invited. We chat in the lift and have exchanged favours, so I felt foolish for assuming we were becoming friends.

When the piano started a few days later, it suddenly seemed inconsiderate. I told her I couldn't settle into my evening. She apologized and said she'd rearrange her practice time. Watching her find a solution made me feel worse: I wasn't upset about a new noise. I was upset about a guest list.

The music can be distracting, but the timing of my complaint wasn't honest. Should I tell her the whole petty reason, or simply say she doesn't need to change her routine on my account? I don't want an apology to become a disguised request for an invitation next time.

Before retracting the whole complaint, decide what you can honestly say about the piano. If the same practice time is usually manageable, say that and explain that you overstated the problem that day. You don't need to pretend a sound you sometimes find distracting is permanently delightful.

The gathering may have meant less about your friendship than you assumed. You don't know how she chose the guests or what kind of evening it was. Treating the piano request as a way to balance that hurt gave her a problem to solve without telling her what had actually upset you.

She has already offered to rearrange practice, so a prompt clarification could spare her an unnecessary change. Be specific about the request you're withdrawing. 'Sorry, I was having a bad day' might still leave her believing five o'clock regularly prevents you from settling down.
