I asked my friend which colour to paint, then argued with every answer

Confessions category photographConfessions

'Do you want an opinion or company while you decide?' my friend asked, holding the two paint cards.

I'd asked her to choose between dark green and red for my room. When she chose green, I explained why red was warmer. When she agreed red could work, I asked whether it would feel too much. We did this for twenty minutes. I'd already bought a red sample.

It was a small thing, but I do it with clothes and weekend plans too: ask for advice, reject it, and feel unsupported if the person stops answering.

How do I ask for reassurance honestly without making my friends pretend every choice is excellent? The paint cards are still on the table. I'm beginning to think the colour was the only uncomplicated part.

Your friend's question gives you a useful answer for next time: 'Mostly company. I've nearly chosen red, but I'm nervous about committing.' That lets her participate without being assigned the impossible job of giving an opinion you can neither reject nor accept.

Owning the red sample would have changed the conversation early. She thought she was choosing between two live options; you were checking a choice already underway. Tell people where you are in a decision so they don't spend twenty minutes defending an alternative you never seriously wanted.
