How do we share a visitor parking space when my neighbour uses it for a second car?

Neighbours category photographNeighbours

“Nobody was using it,” my neighbour said when I asked about the hatchback in the visitor space.

That was true on Monday morning. It was still there on Saturday when my sister arrived.

Our two houses share one space that we have informally kept for visitors. We each have another space for our own car. His partner has started a job that requires a car, so they now have two. He says they can move the hatchback whenever I need the visitor space; I need to text first.

That sounds workable until he is out with the keys. Last weekend I had to ring him twice, and my sister parked further away rather than keep waiting. I don't want every visit to begin with asking permission to use a space we previously treated as shared.

Should I propose booking it for specific times, or would that just formalise his car staying there between my requests? Their new need is real. So is the change from a spare space to a space I have to get released.

Availability and permission have become tangled. Even if he agrees to every request, access now depends on reaching him and the keys being available. That is the practical change to discuss before debating whether the space was empty on Monday.

A calendar could help both households plan, but it won't by itself decide where the second car belongs between bookings. Agree that part explicitly rather than letting the calendar inherit the current arrangement.
