How do I challenge a campaign sign that speaks for our whole street?

Neighbours category photographNeighbours

My neighbour tied a sign to our shared front gate: “THIS STREET SAYS NO.”

It refers to a proposed traffic change. She is campaigning against it because her usual route would become longer. I understand that objection. I also want to read more about the plan before deciding whether the possible change is worth it.

When I asked who the sign represented, she said, “It's a campaign slogan, not a census.” She had spoken to some neighbours, but not everyone. Visitors now ask me about “our campaign,” because they come through the gate beside the sign.

I don't want her to stop expressing her view. I would be happier with a sign identifying the campaign or her household, and I want us to agree before either of us puts a political message on the gate we both use.

Is that a fair request even if a slogan isn't meant to be literal? I have started avoiding the discussion of the traffic plan because I can't get past the part where my address looks like an endorsement.

Keep the two requests clear: agree before using the shared gate, and don't claim your endorsement. You don't have to settle the traffic-plan debate before those requests can be considered.

A slogan can be understood figuratively and still create a specific impression at your home. The visitors asking about “our campaign” show the confusion you are describing, without proving what the whole street thinks.
