How do I admit my deconstructed cake was mostly a forgotten cake?

Funny category photographFunny

'Is the cake coming separately?' the host asked.

I put a tub of buttercream and a bag of candles on the potluck table and said, 'It's deconstructed.' Then I remembered the cake was still on my kitchen counter, forty minutes away.

People laughed. Someone spread the icing on a biscuit. I let the joke carry me past the confession because the host had already put out fruit and another guest had brought dessert. Nobody went without a sweet thing.

Now the host has messaged asking whether she can put me down for another deconstructed dessert next time. She says the children liked assembling their own and wants to buy biscuits for it. I have accidentally become the creator of an activity.

I'm happy to bring icing and biscuits deliberately. Do I tell her what actually happened before accepting, or can a forgotten sponge quietly become a new recipe?

Tell her the origin while accepting the useful idea: 'Confession: I left the actual cake at home. The biscuit version was an accidental rescue, but I'd happily bring a planned one next time.' You don't have to choose between owning the mistake and letting her keep an activity she enjoyed.

The host was working out whether more dessert was arriving. That question deserved a straight answer at the time, even though there was enough food. A small apology for leaving her uncertain would cover that part. You don't need to apologise for the children finding something fun in the improvised version.
