How do I explain my job after my child started calling it 'The Business'?

Funny category photographFunny

'Mum is in The Business,' my seven-year-old told our neighbour. 'I can't discuss the details.'

I work from home updating delivery timetables. He overheard me say, 'I need to deal with some business,' and I once joked that my laptop held secret missions. Now he imagines a much more dramatic career.

When the neighbour asked what I actually do, he said she would need permission. I laughed and changed the subject. That probably helped the story.

He has to draw the people in his household doing their work for a class activity. His drawing of me has dark glasses, a briefcase and a desk labelled CLASSIFIED. I don't want to squash a funny bit of imagination, but I also haven't given him a clear ordinary answer.

How do I explain the timetable job without presenting his drawing as something embarrassing he needs to correct?

Give him a concrete description he can picture: 'I help keep track of when deliveries are planned, and I update the timetable when things change.' Use an invented, simple example rather than showing actual work records. He can draw that beside the secret-mission version if he wants.

You supplied the secret-mission joke and then laughed at the permission line. Tell him that part was pretend. His drawing makes sense with the explanation he had; it doesn't need to become proof that he wasn't listening.
