Everyone is being asked for $25 for the boss’s gift. Can I give less without explaining?

The collection message said, “Suggested contribution: $25.” The next line listed everyone’s name with a blank beside it.

Our manager is moving to another office. She’s been kind to me, and I’d happily write something in her farewell card. I don’t want to put $25 into the gift this week. I could give $5, but the organiser has been replying in the group chat with “Thanks, paid!” beside each name.

Nobody has said we must contribute. It still feels as though a lower amount or no payment will become visible, and I don’t want my appreciation measured in the collection.

Would you send a smaller amount privately, ask the organiser to stop listing payments, or simply sign the card? I’d like to be courteous without explaining my household spending to colleagues.

I’d contact the organiser privately and ask whether a smaller contribution is fine and whether amounts will stay private. You can say, “I’d like to give $5 and add a message to the card.” That states what you’re offering without turning it into an account of why $25 doesn’t suit you this week.
