Can we say no to a proposal at our wedding after my partner already agreed?

Weddings category photographWeddings

"I've got the ring, and your partner said I could use the microphone after dinner," our friend Tom told me. This was the first I'd heard of it.

My partner thought it would be lovely to have two celebrations in the room. I don't want our reception to become the setting for somebody else's proposal, especially when we don't know whether Tom's girlfriend would enjoy being asked in front of our families.

Tom says they'll have discussed marriage beforehand, though the public proposal would be a surprise. He's already arranged for his sister to film it. He hasn't announced the plan to other guests.

I feel uncomfortable taking back permission that was freely given, even though I didn't give it. My partner now says he'd rather tell Tom together than leave me to be the one who spoilt the idea. How do we correct the answer without making Tom's relationship part of a debate?

The person who gave permission should help withdraw it. Your partner can say he answered before the two of you discussed it, and that the reception won't include a proposal. That keeps this from becoming a story about you overruling everybody.
