Can we choose a tourist attraction without having to defend the whole holiday?

Travel category photographTravel

Milo walks past the Bosphorus boat counter. “Recorded commentary? Absolutely not.”

Tess stops beside the sign. She had mentioned wanting a sightseeing cruise before they arrived in Istanbul. Milo nodded then, but has rejected this option, the next one and several well-known sights because they look too touristy. He would rather explore smaller streets and find places without an organised visitor experience.

Tess enjoys that kind of day too. She also likes being told what she is looking at and wants to spend a few hours on the water. The trip has two days left, and she is tired of presenting every popular activity as an exception that needs his approval.

How would you agree on the remaining time? Milo does not have to enjoy commentary, but Tess wants to choose a boat ride without being cast as the person who has failed to travel properly.

“I want to do this because I think I'll enjoy it” is a sufficient starting point. Tess is choosing a holiday activity, not defending a dissertation on authentic travel. Milo can decide whether he wants to join without treating his taste as the entrance exam for hers.
