Can Tuesday be special enough for the napkins we keep saving?

Funny category photographFunny

'Those are the good napkins,' my partner said as I put two beside our plates.

I knew. They're the twelve navy napkins Mum embroidered for us years ago. They live in a box because we save them for special occasions. When friends come, we worry about marks. When family comes, we call it a casual meal. The occasions keep escaping qualification.

Tonight we're eating a simple dinner at home. My partner laughed and asked whether a visiting royal was hiding in the hallway. I said perhaps Tuesday had finally been promoted.

I want to use the things we both like instead of repeatedly admiring them in a box. He likes knowing they're still lovely and worries we'll regret being careless with them.

Can I suggest using a pair now and then without treating his wish to preserve them as ridiculous?

Ask what preserving them means to him. He may value their condition because Mum made them, while you value experiencing them at the table. Those are both attachments to the same gift. Explain that you want to use them occasionally, not stop caring about them.

Tuesday doesn't have to pass an objective test of importance. You can agree that an ordinary dinner together is an occasion you choose to mark. But agreement matters more than the royal joke; don't leave the napkins out as a way of declaring the debate finished.
