Can I ask for official building notices by email while declining the residents' chat?

Housing category photographHousing

I missed the lift-maintenance notice because it was posted in the residents' group, and I hadn't joined. When I asked the manager about another way to receive notices, he said, "Just join it and mute the conversation."

The group invitation says members' contact numbers are shared within the group. I want notices about the building, but I don't want my number becoming a general contact route for neighbours I barely know. The administrator is a resident who also posts parcel questions and social invitations. He said he doesn't have time to run a second mailing list on top of the group.

I understand why he wants one simple channel. What I haven't established is which updates are management notices and who is responsible for issuing them. My agreement doesn't describe the group as the notification method. I have asked the manager to clarify the building's arrangement rather than assumed it guarantees me a particular channel.

Would requesting management emails or a maintained noticeboard be reasonable? I can decline the social chat, but I don't want that choice to leave me learning about routine shutdowns when I reach the lift with shopping bags.

Ask management which notices it issues and how residents are meant to receive them. The group's administrator may be forwarding information as a favour. Before asking him to do more work, establish whether he is actually responsible for the updates you missed.

Muting a conversation would reduce interruptions, but it doesn't address your stated concern about sharing a contact number. Say that clearly so the manager isn't solving the notification-volume problem instead of the contact-disclosure problem.
