AITA for stopping my song at an open mic to ask my dad not to sing along?

AITA category photographAITA

I stopped halfway through the second verse and said into the microphone, "Dad, this isn't a duet."

A few people laughed. Dad went quiet.

It was my first open mic with a song I'd written myself. My parents bought tickets and sat near the front. Dad had heard me practicing at home, so he knew the chorus and most of the verses. He sang along loudly enough that I could hear him from the small stage.

Before my set, I'd asked him to save the singing for the car. He grinned and said he'd behave. Once I started, I think he got carried away. I tried making a little downward gesture with my hand, but he didn't notice.

Afterward he said he'd been proud and hadn't realized how loud he was. Mum said the microphone comment turned his enthusiasm into a joke for strangers. Dad stayed for the rest of the acts, then left without asking for a photo.

I wanted people to hear the song I was performing. I also liked getting a laugh when I finally said something, and that part feels worse now. AITA for stopping, or for the way I stopped?

You'd made the request before the set, and the hand gesture hadn't worked. Asking him to stop wasn't an unreasonable surprise. The line you chose did, however, invite the room to laugh at him. Those two parts can be assessed separately.

His staying for the other acts matters. He didn't turn the interruption into a bigger scene, even if he was hurt. A private conversation could acknowledge that you wanted his support and still needed him to let your voice carry the performance.
