AITA for correcting my friend when he told the waiter our side dish never arrived?

AITA category photographAITA

"Take the mushrooms off, please. They never came," my friend Dev said when the bill arrived.

I said, "They did come. We ate them."

The waiter paused. Dev said he meant that the proper portion never came: we'd ordered a sharing bowl and received a small dish. The waiter offered to ask the manager about the size. Dev said to leave it, and we paid.

The portion really was disappointing. When it arrived, Dev said it looked like half a bowl, and I agreed. We ate it while talking about something else. Neither of us asked the waiter about it then.

At the bill, I didn't think Dev was explaining the problem. I thought he was trying to get the whole $8 removed by saying something that wasn't true. He says restaurant staff understand that "never came" can mean an order wasn't properly fulfilled, and that I made him sound like a liar over a few mushrooms.

I don't agree with that explanation, but I also didn't ask him to clarify. I contradicted him immediately, in a tone that apparently surprised the waiter as much as it did Dev.

He says he won't raise any complaint when eating with me again because I'll side with staff. I would have supported asking about the portion. I didn't want to support the sentence he actually used. AITA?

The small portion was a legitimate thing to ask about. Saying it never arrived was a different account of the meal, and you were sitting there as someone who had eaten it. Correcting that didn't require pretending the bowl was satisfactory.

Dev's explanation about what staff supposedly understand is his interpretation, not something you've established with the waiter. The offer to check with the manager sounds like a chance to discuss the real complaint. Dev chose to stop that conversation.
