AITA for staying seated during the standing ovation at my friend's play?

AITA category photographAITA

I clapped, but I didn't stand. My friend saw me from the stage.

It was the final night of her amateur production. I bought a ticket, watched the whole performance and waited afterward to give her the flowers I'd brought. I didn't enjoy the play very much, although I thought she handled a difficult scene well.

When almost everyone around me stood for the curtain call, I stayed seated because I thought an ovation meant I was exceptionally impressed. She later asked whether I had stayed down to make a point. I said no, then explained my reasoning.

She said she hadn't needed me to review the play from my chair; she'd wanted to see her friend celebrating that she'd finished a demanding run. I told her the ticket, flowers and applause should count too.

Now the flowers are part of an argument about whether I was supportive. I wasn't trying to embarrass her, but I did notice I was one of the few still sitting. AITA?

The ticket, flowers and applause were real support. Staying seated doesn't erase them. Your friend may still have read the visible difference in the audience as a message you didn't intend.

You treated standing as a precise rating of artistic quality; she treated it as joining a celebration. Neither meaning was agreed between you. Explaining your rating system afterward probably made the seated moment feel more critical than it originally was.
