AITA for refusing to buy takeaway after I ate the last vegetarian portion at a potluck?

AITA category photographAITA

"You'll have to get Nora something," our host said when I took the last piece of spinach pie.

I'd already eaten one piece. Nora, who is vegetarian, was arriving late. There were meat dishes, rice and salads on the table, but the pie was the only vegetarian main anyone had brought.

I knew Nora was coming. Nobody had told me a piece was being kept for her, and after the first round there was still one in the dish. I took it as seconds.

The host said he'd assumed we would leave it because he had mentioned Nora was twenty minutes away. I said mentioning her arrival wasn't the same as reserving food. He asked me to order her a $19 takeaway meal. I refused, partly because I'd brought a large salad myself and didn't think I'd agreed to pay whenever the food ran short.

Nora arrived during the argument and said she'd eat the rice and salad. She was polite, but she'd come from work and hadn't eaten lunch. I offered her the untouched half of the pie still on my plate. She said she'd rather leave it.

I don't think the host made the reservation clear. I also chose a second portion of the one main Nora could eat while having other options myself. AITA for refusing the takeaway request?

The host could have set a piece aside, but you didn't need a formal reservation to notice that Nora's options were narrower than yours. Your first portion wasn't the problem. Taking the last one as seconds is the part worth acknowledging.

Buying a particular $19 meal wasn't the only possible response. You could have offered to help find something Nora wanted, with her input. The argument became about an invoice before she had even arrived to say what would suit her.
