AITA for declining a shift swap after my coworker covered for me last month?

AITA category photographAITA

"You said you had an appointment," my coworker Finn said. "Then I saw you in the game chat all afternoon."

He'd asked me to work his Saturday shift so he could go to his cousin's birthday. I had the day off and wanted to stay home. Instead of saying that, I claimed I had an appointment.

Last month Finn covered a Saturday for me when I had a family lunch. I thanked him and said, "I'll owe you one." He took that to mean I would return a comparable favor when he asked.

This Saturday was the first free day I'd had in two weeks. I spent it playing an online game with mutual friends. Finn joined the chat after work and saw the messages from our afternoon session.

I told him I didn't think having a day off meant I was automatically available. He said he understood that, but I'd offered to repay the favor and then invented a reason not to.

I offered to cover a different Saturday. He says the birthday has already happened, so a later swap doesn't address why he couldn't rely on my answer this time.

I still wanted that day at home. The more I defend wanting it, the more I avoid explaining why I lied instead of discussing what I'd meant by owing him one. AITA for refusing the swap?

Wanting an uninterrupted day at home is a real preference, not something you have to disguise as an appointment. But Finn was asking against the background of a favor and your offer to return it. That context makes your refusal more than a question of who controls a day off.

The lie probably hurt your credibility more than an honest no would have. Finn says he understands that free time isn't automatic availability. Take that seriously instead of arguing against a demand he isn't describing.
