AITA for donating the vase my mother made and then telling her it had chipped?

My sister sent me a photo from the charity shop: a tall purple vase, priced at $9, with our mother's initials on the bottom.

"Please tell me this isn't yours," she wrote.

It was. Mum took a pottery course six years ago and gave me the vase when I moved into my first flat. I thanked her and kept it on a shelf, although it was too tall for the flowers I usually bought and I never liked the color.

Last month I cleared out several things before moving to a smaller place. I donated the vase with a box of household items. I didn't ask Mum whether she wanted it back.

When she helped me unpack, she noticed it was missing. I said the rim had chipped during packing and I'd thrown it away. She looked upset, and I told myself that was still better than saying I didn't want something she'd made.

My sister bought it from the shop. She now wants me to collect it from her and tell Mum the truth. I offered to give my sister the $9 but said I still didn't have a place for the vase.

She says I'm treating the rescue like an unwanted purchase instead of acknowledging why it mattered. Mum hasn't heard any of this yet. I've got a new flat without the vase and a sister with it on her kitchen counter. AITA for donating it, or is the lie the part I need to fix?

Not wanting a large purple vase in a smaller home is understandable. Saying it chipped created a different problem: your mother is grieving an accident that didn't happen, while your sister is now holding evidence of the actual decision. Taking the vase back won't by itself resolve that.

Your sister may have bought it because seeing your mother's work priced at $9 hurt, rather than because she expects you to reimburse her. Ask what she wants to happen to it. You two might disagree about your mother's feelings and still find someone who actually wants the vase.
