What should replace my son's promise to do all the puppy care before school?
ParentingThe puppy's breakfast was still beside the measuring cup when we needed to leave. My seven-year-old said, "I remembered yesterday. Why does yesterday stop counting?"
Before we brought the puppy home, he signed a page promising to feed him, help clean up and join the morning walk. I treated it as proof that he understood the commitment. Three weeks later, I'm prompting every step while my partner gets everyone ready for school.
We make sure the puppy is cared for. The argument is about the promise, not whether we let a task go undone. Last night I said we might have to find the puppy another home if our son wasn't responsible. My partner said the adults had also signed up for the dog, just without the decorative certificate.
Our son loves him and helps enthusiastically when we do things together. He is much less successful with the whole morning sequence. How would you revise the responsibility agreement without dismissing the extra work the adults are now doing or making every forgotten scoop a threat to lose the puppy?
