What should I say when finishing classwork early always earns my daughter another worksheet?

Education category photographEducation

"If I go slower, I only have to do one sheet." My daughter said this while rubbing out a correct answer so she could write it again.

She's nine. Her teacher gives another page of similar sums to children who finish early. I understand that the teacher needs something useful for them to do while helping the rest of the class. My daughter now watches the clock and saves her last two answers until the lesson is nearly over.

I haven't asked for harder work because I don't know whether quick answers mean she understands everything. She also makes mistakes when the question is written as a story. Could I ask the teacher about a different task after she's shown she can do the first sheet, without making it sound as though she is above ordinary practice?

Rubbing out a correct answer is a very specific response to the arrangement. Tell the teacher what she said, without labelling her lazy or unusually advanced. It shows that she is making decisions about the amount of work, not just the maths.

The story questions are useful context. Perhaps the extension could involve explaining one answer or tackling a different kind of question, if that fits the lesson. More rows of the same sum may not address the difficulty you have noticed.
