What should I do before agreeing to move a rental sofa that might have bed bugs?

Housing category photographHousing

The landlord said he could send someone to take the sofa downstairs tomorrow. My partner said that sounded ideal. I asked where it would go and he replied, "Out of our room, which is the important part."

We have just moved into a furnished US rental. There are dark spots along one sofa seam, and we found a small insect nearby. We don't know what it is. I sent clear photographs to the landlord; he hasn't arranged an identification or inspection yet. He offered removal because the sofa is his and he thought we wanted it gone.

We've kept our own boxed furniture apart from it while waiting for advice. My partner wants to buy a replacement immediately so the living room starts feeling like ours. I want an answer about the insect and a plan for the room before paying $350 for another sofa.

What should I ask for now? I appreciate the quick response, but a clear space where the sofa used to be wouldn't tell us whether the original concern had been dealt with.

The first question is identification. [EPA guidance](https://www.epa.gov/bedbugs/top-ten-tips-prevent-or-control-bed-bugs) recommends establishing whether the insects are bed bugs before choosing a response. Tell the landlord you want suitable identification and an inspection plan, rather than confirming the diagnosis from spots and one unfamiliar insect.
