The takeaway checkout suggests a tip before I've collected anything. How do I choose without feeling judged?

Food category photographFood

I selected a pickup order and reached a screen offering three tip amounts, with a separate option to enter another amount or leave no tip. My friend watched over my shoulder. "Don't be that person," he said when I opened the other option.

I'm collecting the food myself. I don't know who receives the tip or whether I can add one at collection. I usually decide what I want to give when I pay in person, so the advance prompt caught me off guard.

I'm not asking for a universal tipping rule or assuming the suggested amount is mandatory. I want to make a considered choice rather than tap the middle button to stop the commentary. What would you find out about this particular order, and how would you tell a friend to let you handle your own checkout?

The screen's suggested amounts aren't enough information about where the money goes. If that affects your choice, ask the restaurant about pickup tips and whether you can give one at collection. Their answer matters more than your friend's guess about what the prompt means.

Your friend can have a generous tipping preference without supervising your payment. 'I'll decide what to give; please stop watching the checkout' is a reasonable request. You don't need to defend your whole approach to restaurant spending while a dinner order waits.
