The guild promised my rare drop to a newcomer before asking me. Is refusing selfish?

Gaming category photographGaming

"Great, we can give that to Lena," our organizer said when the weapon dropped. I was still looking at it. I'd attended six runs hoping for that exact item; Lena had joined us that evening.

Our usual arrangement is that the person who receives an item decides whether to keep or trade it, where the game allows a trade. Lena's current weapon is much weaker than mine, so passing it on would improve the group. The organizer announced it as a welcoming gesture before asking me privately.

I said I wanted to keep it. The voice channel went quiet, and Lena said she didn't want a fight over her. Now I feel as if I refused a gift she'd already been offered, even though I wasn't the person making the offer.

I'm happy to help her get equipped. I don't want "help the team" to mean my upgrades are provisional whenever someone else needs them more. Should I keep the item and address the announcement, or offer it this time and insist we decide a clearer rule before the next run?

Lena was put in an awkward position too. A brief message saying you don't blame her for the announcement could take her out of the middle. You can welcome her to the group without pretending you offered the weapon.

Giving it away this time might feel generous, but doing so while resentful could make the next drop more explosive. Keep or trade it because you choose to, rather than using the item as an apology for an offer somebody else made.

The weaker weapon is a legitimate reason to ask. Six runs waiting is a legitimate reason to decline under your current arrangement. A group can adopt a different allocation system for future runs, but it needs people to agree before the desirable item is on screen.
