The family video call is always at two in the morning for me. Can I ask everyone else to take a turn?

Family category photographFamily

“You can sleep in on Sunday,” my brother said when I asked to move our monthly family call.

I live several time zones away. The time that suits my parents and siblings is two in the morning here. I managed the first few calls, but I work some Sundays and don't enjoy spending the next day recovering from a conversation I could barely follow.

Last month I missed it and said my internet was down. That was easier than admitting I had gone to bed. Mum says the whole point is having all of us together, but she also thinks changing a familiar time will mean people forget.

I miss seeing everyone. I would join a shorter call at an awkward but manageable hour, and I could take an occasional late night. I don't want the arrangement to depend on being the only person whose next morning never counts.

How do I propose a fair rotation without turning the call into a negotiation every month?

Offer two or three actual times with the local time shown for each household. “Earlier” can sound like a small change until somebody sees what it means for them. A rotation should share the inconvenience you can each realistically manage, rather than distribute equally impossible hours.

Correct the internet excuse before it becomes an offer of technical help: “The connection was fine. I was too tired to join and should have said that.” You don't need to apologise for sleeping, but an honest explanation gives the family the right problem to discuss.

Mum values everybody appearing together. That doesn't mean every call must include everybody for its full length. Perhaps a brief shared conversation and separate longer chats would preserve what she likes without requiring you to stay alert through an hour of family updates at two.
