Should we ask wedding guests to book a dearer hotel rate to fill our room block?

Weddings category photographWeddings

"The public rate is $139. Your wedding link says $169," my cousin messaged. She'd booked directly because the rooms looked the same.

We reserved a block of twenty room nights and signed an agreement about paying for unused nights below a minimum. I understood the risk in theory. I hadn't considered that guests might find a cheaper rate outside our link.

My partner wants to ask everyone to use the block so we don't face a bill. I think asking relatives to spend another $30 a night because of an agreement we made is different from offering convenient accommodation.

We haven't reached the release date. The hotel says it will review the direct bookings we identify, but hasn't said whether they will count towards our minimum. I don't want to promise guests a solution or describe the cheaper booking as letting us down.

What would you clarify with the hotel before sending another accommodation message?

Ask the hotel whether the direct bookings can be credited, what information it needs and what the agreement says about release dates and any remaining shortfall. Get that explanation before asking guests to change a booking.
