Should renters get the same turn choosing books as owners in our building's club?
Neighbours“Owners should pick the books because we're here for the long term,” a member said when I put my name on the selection rota.
This is our building's informal book club, not a management meeting. We each buy our own copy or borrow one. Renters and owners have been attending the same monthly discussions.
I have lived here for three years and expect to stay for another year. The owner who spoke says renters might leave after choosing a book and the rest of the club will have to read it without them. That could happen; an owner could miss a month too. She started the club, and I suspect the old selection arrangement feels more important to her than I understood.
I don't need every book to be one I like. I do want to take an equal turn after showing up and reading the choices other people make.
Would it be better to ask for a rota among regular attendees, or to ask whether this is meant to be an owners' club at all? The second question sounds confrontational, but it would be clearer than being invited to contribute everything except a choice.
