Should our amateur play keep the shopping-list line I said by accident?

Funny category photographFunny

'We've lost the milk, the eggs and a giant radish,' I announced.

The line was meant to be, 'We've lost everything.' I had blanked during our amateur play's rehearsal and glanced at the shopping reminder I'd accidentally tucked behind my prop note. The cast laughed. Our writer and director, Beth, laughed too.

Afterwards she asked me to go back to the original line. It's the moment the characters realise their journey has failed. Another actor said the radish was the funniest thing we'd done all evening and that we should keep it. Two people agreed.

I like getting a laugh, and now I'm tempted to repeat it at the next rehearsal. Beth says she'd rather work on the scene she wrote than redesign it around my shopping. Do I push once more for the funny version, or accept that an excellent accidental radish may belong somewhere outside this play?

Use the original line at the next rehearsal. Beth has already answered and explained what that moment needs to do. If you still want to propose a deliberate change, discuss it outside the scene rather than inserting the radish again and making her stop the rehearsal to remove it.

The laugh is real within the rehearsal, but it doesn't tell you what the line does to the rest of the scene. Your fellow actors were surprised by an accident. Beth is thinking about the journey ending. Those are different things to judge, and her explanation deserves more than a popularity contest.

The shopping reminder can be a good rehearsal anecdote. It doesn't have to disappear from everyone's memory when you restore the script. You could enjoy the story with the cast afterwards without asking the characters to lose their groceries every performance.
