Should I pay for building-wide internet when I need my own connection for work?

Housing category photographHousing

The letting manager pointed to the new rent offer and said, "The broadband package saves everyone arranging their own." I pointed to the separate $45 monthly charge. My existing connection costs $60, and my employer has asked me not to cancel it until our IT team checks the replacement.

This is a US apartment building. The proposed package is described as fast internet included with the new agreement, although the price sheet lists it separately and the manager says it cannot be removed. A demonstration in the lobby loaded a video quickly. I haven't tried the service in my apartment, seen its full terms or learned who handles an outage in the evening.

If I keep my line as well, internet would cost $105 a month. If I cancel it, I might have to arrange reinstatement if the employer's requirements aren't met. I don't know that the building service is unsuitable; I just have less information about it than the manager's reassurance implies.

The [FCC's broadband-label guidance](https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DOC-401799A1.pdf) gives me a starting point for asking about price, speeds and data allowances. What else should I establish before agreeing to a package that's meant to simplify things but may leave me paying for two?

The employer's check is a dependency, not a verdict against the building network. Get the details your IT team needs before cancelling the service that currently works. The lobby video doesn't test your work setup or establish how the connection performs in your apartment.
