Should I enrol my personal phone for work email or take the second phone offered?

Technology category photographTechnology

The setup message told me to install Company Portal and enrol my phone in Microsoft Intune. I paused at the word “manage.” A colleague said, “They can see everything once you do that.”

IT offered a company phone instead. I would rather carry one device, but I also have family photos and personal apps on mine. The person answering the helpdesk said I would get an explanation of our enrollment setup; I have not received it yet.

Microsoft's guide separates personal content that Intune enrollment does not expose from device details and app information that can be visible, with some visibility depending on configuration. [Microsoft's explanation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/user-help/enrollment/data-visibility). That is more specific than my colleague's warning, but it still leaves questions about our own setup and what happens when I leave.

What would you want clarified before choosing? The second phone is an available option, not a threat. I am deciding whether one pocket is worth accepting management I do not yet understand.

Ask IT to identify the ownership classification and enrollment method they intend for your phone, plus the controls they apply through it. “Manage” is too broad to settle the decision. You can wait for that explanation while using the offered company device if that is workable.

Microsoft says Intune enrollment does not let the organisation see personal photos, messages or browsing history, while device identifiers are visible. Some app-inventory visibility depends on configuration. Keep those documented distinctions; “they see everything” overstates this particular service's guide. [Intune visibility](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/user-help/enrollment/data-visibility).

Ask what removal or reset actions IT can take in the proposed setup, and which data would be affected. Do not infer that answer from what they can see. Visibility and management actions are different questions, and your organisation should explain the actual arrangement.
