Should I encourage my daughter to call her stepfather Dad when he says it would mean a lot?

Parenting category photographParenting

"Mark already answers when I call him Mark," my eight-year-old said after her grandmother prompted her to say Dad.

My husband has lived with us for two years. He does school runs, remembers the library day and has a good relationship with her. Her father is also involved in her life. We never agreed that she would use a different title after the wedding.

Mark told me privately that he would love to hear Dad, although he hasn't asked her himself. I repeated that to my mother, who turned it into encouragement at dinner. My daughter asked whether Mark would be sad whenever she said his name.

I wanted to recognize his place in the family. I may have made a title sound like the payment for the care he gives. How would you discuss his feelings with him and stop the dinner-table prompting without describing their relationship as less important because she uses his name?

Tell your mother to stop prompting, and tell your daughter that Mark remains part of the family whichever agreed name she uses. She shouldn't have to monitor his sadness every time she needs to get his attention.

Mark's wish can be meaningful without becoming her assignment. He told you privately, and you widened the audience. Acknowledge that with him before asking him to help undo the pressure your mother introduced.

His school runs and attention deserve adult appreciation, but tallying them in a conversation about the title would make the care sound conditional. Recognize those contributions directly. Your daughter can value him without using one particular word.
