Our new job advert starts above my salary. How do I ask for a pay review?

Career / Work category photographCareer / Work

The advert for our second studio administrator listed £30,000 to £32,000. I’m on £28,000.

I’ve been at the Bristol studio for two years. The advertised tasks look much like mine: bookings, supplier records and keeping the production calendar current. I also show new staff how the booking system works. I don’t yet know whether the new person will have additional responsibilities that aren’t in the advert.

My last review was positive, but we didn’t discuss pay. Seeing the range made me want to march into the manager’s office with the advert. I’d rather have a conversation that can get somewhere.

How would you use the advert without making the new colleague the problem? What would you prepare before asking whether my salary can be reviewed, and what question would you want answered if the manager says the roles aren’t comparable?

The advert gives you a concrete reason to ask how the two roles are positioned. Bring it alongside a short account of your present responsibilities. “Can we review my pay against this role and the work I’m doing?” keeps the focus on your employment, rather than what an unknown new colleague deserves.
