My reflux food list keeps growing. How do I ask for a plan I can actually use?

Health category photographHealth

My partner crossed tomatoes off the shopping list because a video mentioned reflux. Last week it was onions. The week before it was all fruit.

I have been diagnosed with reflux and have instructions from my clinician. These extra exclusions are ours, added one at a time whenever we find another warning. Now we cook separate dinners and spend more, but I cannot tell which change helped.

[NIDDK says some people find particular foods or drinks worsen their symptoms and recommends discussing the pattern with a doctor](https://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/digestive-diseases/acid-reflux-ger-gerd-adults/eating-diet-nutrition). It does not give us a reason to treat every possible trigger as my personal trigger.

I want to ask my care team how to review what I eat without changing the existing medical plan myself. My partner hears that as giving up on the help he has researched.

What information would make that discussion useful? The fridge has become a collection of things we are afraid to cook.

Bring the distinction you made here: which instructions came from the clinician and which exclusions you added yourselves. Ask how to review those extra restrictions and whether nutrition support would help. Do not quietly replace the clinical plan with this thread's preferred diet.

A brief record of meals, symptom timing and the changes you made could help you explain what has been happening. Ask the care team how much detail it wants; tracking every ingredient indefinitely may add another difficult task without answering your question.
