My partner's civic meetings always leave me doing bedtime. Can we share the cost?

Politics category photographPolitics

At six forty, my partner put on her coat and said, "They can't decide the town's future without residents there." I was holding two toothbrushes.

She attends a weekly group discussing the town plan. I support her going. For six weeks, though, I've handled dinner and bedtime while she stays for the discussion afterwards. My own evening class has been postponed twice because neither of us arranged cover.

When I asked for a different plan, she heard it as asking her to care less about the town. I don't want to rank civic work against everything else we do. I want us to notice that her attendance has a cost somebody is already paying.

How can I ask for a fair arrangement without making her choose between participating and being a good partner?

The toothbrushes are part of the meeting's cost, even though they aren't on its agenda. Ask for an arrangement about the actual evening: departure, return, cover and your class. Supporting her participation doesn't mean your available time is unlimited.
