My friend wants an immersive game with no markers, but makes me do all the navigating

Gaming category photographGaming

"Don't turn the quest markers on; it ruins the exploring," Mira said. Five minutes later she asked me which fork led to the mill.

I like exploring too. What I don't like is keeping a map open on my second screen, remembering every landmark, and answering "Are we nearly there?" while she gathers flowers. When I lost the route last night, she said, "You're the map person."

I became the map person by looking up our position once when we were both lost. We never agreed that I would spend every session steering. She says we can wander without a destination, but she also gets irritated when a short quest takes the whole evening.

There is a marker option in the game we chose. I don't need it permanently on, and she doesn't have to stop enjoying the scenery. How can I stop providing invisible directions without turning our next journey into a demonstration designed to prove her wrong?

Tell her before leaving town that you won't keep the second-screen map open this time. That gives her a real choice between wandering, sharing navigation, and using the marker option. Quietly withholding directions after she asks would make the walk feel like a trap.

"You're the map person" sounds affectionate until it becomes a permanent assignment. One useful rescue at a fork doesn't mean you volunteered for every route. Name what you miss while navigating—looking around and gathering things—rather than describing her flower picking as wasted time.
