Is it rude to split up at an exhibition when we look at art at different speeds?

My cousin took a photo of the painting while I was halfway through its wall label. 'Next room?' she asked. It was the fourth time in ten minutes.

We'd bought exhibition tickets together. She likes walking through once and returning to anything that catches her eye. I wanted to listen to the audio guide and spend time with three particular paintings. Neither of us had mentioned that before arriving.

I suggested meeting at the cafe in forty-five minutes. She said she'd invited me because she wanted company, not someone to travel there with and then lose at the door. I put the guide away, but left feeling as if I'd attended the exhibition without really seeing it.

Should looking together be part of the invitation, or can we have a shared afternoon that includes some time in different rooms?

Forty-five minutes alone may have sounded like most of the visit if she expected a quick circuit. Ask how long she'd planned to stay. That helps you discuss an actual afternoon rather than whether splitting up is inherently rude.

Which painting would each of you most want the other to notice? Choosing one together could give you some real shared looking, then leave space for your guide and her faster circuit. It needn't be either constant company or no company.

Her way of visiting isn't necessarily less serious. She may learn more from looking across the rooms than from the labels. Your preferred pace is equally real; neither of you needs to turn it into the correct way to appreciate art.
