Is it okay to ask a prearranged question to help a post-screening Q&A start?

Entertainment category photographEntertainment

Before our small film-club screening, the host gave me a question to ask the visiting director if the room went quiet. 'Just put your hand up like everyone else,' he said.

I help with the club's bookings. The question about a location choice is reasonable, but the host wrote it. He wants an easy opening so the director doesn't sit through an awkward silence. I understand that.

I suggested he introduce it himself as a question prepared by the club. He said hearing from the audience would make people more comfortable joining in. I don't want my volunteer role hidden so a planned prompt looks spontaneous.

Can I help start the conversation while making that role clear, or am I making a harmless bit of hosting unnecessarily formal? The screening is next week, so there's still time to agree how the opening will work.

You could say, 'I help with the club, and we've prepared a question to get us started.' Then ask it. The wording needn't become a formal announcement; it simply tells the room where the prompt came from.
