Is a tidier chat app worth moving our eight-person hobby group?

Technology category photographTechnology

‘Where is Saturday happening?’ Ben asked in our model-making chat. The address was twenty-three messages above, between a paint-colour debate and a cat sitting in a kit box. I pasted it again, then suggested an app with separate spaces for plans and casual chat.

Three other people said yes. Two did not reply. Ben would use whichever we picked. The seventh member asked whether eight friends meeting twice a month really needed another account and app.

The new app looks tidy in my test group. It only contains my messages. Nobody has missed a session in the old chat, but I book the room and keep retyping the address.

Should we try moving for a month, or agree a clearer final-plan message where we already are? I may be trading the job of pasting an address for the job of teaching everyone a new interface. I would also miss the cat.

For the next meeting, try one final-plan message with the date, time and address, and ask everyone to acknowledge it. If the current app has a convenient way to keep that message easy to find, use it. You would learn whether the problem is finding the plan without asking seven people to move first.

The empty test group flatters almost any organisational idea. Put a pretend change of venue and a few kit photos into it, then ask a willing member to find the final address. A trial becomes more informative when it includes the kind of clutter you are trying to manage.

Three yeses and two silences leave two people's needs unknown. Ask the quiet members whether they saw the proposal and what would make it workable. That is different from counting silence as agreement, especially if the original problem is that practical messages get buried.
